The Power of Perception

Every other morning I weigh myself. Today was a weigh in day, so I stepped on the scale and weighed myself. Then I came to my office and we had a scale to do some stuff for work so I stepped on the scale. Between my scale at home and my scale at work it showed a difference of  5 lbs. Now obviously I had not lost 5 lbs from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. The difference in what I believe to be my weight is which scale I choose to believe. If you ask an athlete of mine that goes to my church what they think about me you're going to get a very different answer than if you asked a student in a class who may often cause trouble. If you ask a student, my boss, my mentor, my brother, or a friend to give one word to describe me you'll probably get a few different answers because each perceives me in a different way.

It occurred to me that just as I can choose a scale to perceive my weight many people choose the wrong scale to perceive the character of God.

There is only one right, just, and proven scale to know for certain the accurate and true character of God. That is the Bible.

I find that we often try to perceive who God is through religion, through people, through circumstances. It is not that these things will not often demonstrate the character of God. As in fact that is our very responsibility as a Christian... to be a demonstration of the very character and nature of God Himself.

However, one of those scales must be wrong. It is not possible that I weighed one weight at 5 a.m. and 5 lbs. lighter at 10 a.m. Therefore, which scale I choose to be my FACT is imperative, otherwise I am simply wrong.

Many things will try to give you an answer for who God is and what His  character is like. It is important not to assume the character of God through any other scale or source than one that matches up with the Word of God.

Which scale do you choose?

Romans 10:2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 2 Cor. 10:5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

It's easy to try and let circumstances tell us who God is. When a young kid dies to believe that God wanted another angel in heaven (The Bible says with long life He will satisfy us). When people go to hell to believe that God must have willed them in hell (The Bible says He desires all men to be saved).  Make sure your perception of who God is in line with who scripture says God is, now who man has said He is, not what religion says He is, not what experience says He is.

As I asked the Lord about the comparison of the scales He spoke to me and said many people have a wrong perception of who I am because they choose to look at the wrong scale.

Lord I want to know you, not have a false idea about you.

Be Blessed,

J. Tate
