A Witness

Witness-to see, hear, or know by personal presence and perception: to bear witness to; testify to; give or afford evidence of.

Thank you dictonary.com

I know we've all heard this before, but it's on my mind a lot today. When I think about being a witness a barge of scriptures come rushing into my mind, of course the Great Commission among other missional scriptures, but this one stands out.

Acts 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."

What is it about the Holy Spirit that will make us witnesses? What is a witness?

To be His witness "to testify, give or afford evidence of", we must "see, hear, or know by personal presence and perception". In other words in order to be His witness, we must know Him. I know that's some great revelation right there?!? LOL.

But, thinking today about being His witness, about Acts 1:8, about the Holy Spirit, brought me once again to John 14. Oh faithful John 14. In verse 20 we see that through the Holy Spirit Jesus is able to be ever with us, in verse 21 THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT JESUS WILL DISCLOSE HIMSELF TO US, in verse 23 He makes His abode in us, verse 26 the Holy Spirit will cause us to remember the Word of Jesus. Oh that's all so good... now let's see.

In chapter 15:16 the Holy Spirit will testify about Jesus and so will we!!!!

So let's go back to Acts 1:8 when the Holy Spirit comes upon us we will be witnesses.... why? First off the power to do the works of Jesus (love, joy, peace, healing, casting out demons, forgiveness, boldness, miracles, etc) comes from the Holy Spirit and also the Holy Spirit will reveal who Jesus is to us, He is literally the character of Jesus dwelling inside of us!

So we are able to witness and testify about Jesus because with the Holy Spirit we "see, hear, and know by personal presence" the Son of God, the Perfect Lamb, Jesus Christ.

We don't have second hand knowledge of Him. We don't have folk tales and stories. He makes His abode in us through the Holy Spirit. Praise God. I can testify with first hand knowledge about the Savior and Redeemer Jesus Christ. Through the Holy Spirit I don't just have one story of the day I got saved, but I have testimony after testimony of His work in my life.

Be Blessed, J. Tate
