2 Timothy 1:12 "For the which cause I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know who I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day"
I want to focus on "for I know who I have believed".
Yesterday I was reading through James when one small little overlooked scripture JUMPED off the page at me. Now I'll be real honest, I typically don't like to blog about "messages" or "sermons" or "teachings" that I plan on using, but after yesterday and this morning I just have to share! (So those youth or school students that read my blog there is a strong possibility you'll get this message again sometime in the next month or so)
James 1:16 "Do not err my beloved brethren"
Preceding this verse James was explaining some of God's character and then following this verse he continues to describe more of who God is. James was pleading with the reader "DO NOT ERR MY BELOVED BRETHREN". In other words, YOU PEOPLE WHO I DEARLY LOVE, do not be confused on who God is. Don't be confused on HIS CHARACTER.
It similarly reminds me of a verse in Romans 10 when Paul says of a people group that they were "zealous for God without knowledge of Him"
In Timothy, Paul is saying, I am not worried, I am not ashamed, I have confidence, because I KNOW THE CHARACTER OF THE ONE I BELIEVE IN! Look at how the Amplified says it...
"... still I am not ashamed, for I know (perceive, have knowledge of, and am acquainted with) Him whom I have believed (adhered to and trusted in and relied on), and I am (positively) persuaded that He is abel to guard and keep that which has been entrusted to me and which I have committed (to Him) until that day"
Romans, Timothy, James, and I could give you countless others where KNOWING HIM is what brings peace, KNOWING HIM brings victory, KNOWING HIM brings joy, KNOWING HIM .... You see Paul said, "for this cause I suffer" but he is still not ashamed because HE KNOWS WHO HE BELIEVES IN.
Paul was saying despite my circumstances, whether I be suffering, whether I be in prison, whether I be getting beat, whether I be shipwrecked, whether I be reclining at the table with friends, whether I be close to my beloved son in the faith timothy, NO MATTER WHAT MY CIRCUMSTANCES.... I am not ashamed, I am at peace, I am content, because I KNOW HIM WHO I HAVE BELIEVED IN. Paul knew the character of God. Paul TRUSTED God.
For we know that He works ALL THINGS for the good of those who love Him.
So I plead with you... DO NOT ERR MY BELOVED BRETHREN...KNOW HIS CHARACTER... Knowing Him brings forth trusting Him, trusting Him brings forth peace in ALL circumstances.
