Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom

image004 Colossians has been one of my favorite books since an encounter I had with the Lord from Colossians 3 while in Rwanda back in 2009. One of the most awesome things about the Word is that it is alive and you can read something numerous times and get new understanding each time.

This morning as I read through Colossians a new theme popped out to me throughout the book. Look at this. "For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the KNOWLEDGE of His will in all WISDOM and SPIRITUAL UNDERSTANDING; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the KNOWLEDGE of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; (Colossians 1:9-11)

As I read through this passage and got to the "walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him..." I stopped and said WAIT WAIT WAIT... I WANT THAT. I want to walk worthy of Him, be fully pleasing to Him, I want to be fruitful in every good work, I want to increase in the knowledge of Him, I want to be strengthened, I want patience and longsuffering with joy!!!

What is the key? "we don't cease to pray for you that..." "You may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding"

Then I see it similarly again. "that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of UNDERSTANDING, to the KNOWLEDGE of the mystery of God, both of the father and of Christ in whom are hidden all the treasures of WISDOM AND KNOWLEDGE" (Col. 2:2-3) Again... "and have put on the new man who is RENEWED IN KNOWLEDGE according to the image of Him who created him" (Col. 3:10) "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in ALL WISDOM..." (Col. 3:16) "Walk in WISDOM..." (Col. 4:5)

Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom. Three things that are emphasized not just in Colossians, but multiple times throughout scripture. We know that proverbs says to get understanding, to bind wisdom around our neck, we know the Word says to seek the knowledge of God, also the knowledge of His will. We know that Hosea says that God's people are destroyed because of lack of knowledge.

"By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established, through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures" (Prov. 24:3-4) Also see similar scriptures (Prov. 23:23; Prov 9:6; Prov. 8:11; Prov. 19:8)

" For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.... Then you will understand what is right and just and fair--every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. (Prov. 2:6, 9-11)

I told you a story in this week's blog Trustworthy about walking into the sanctuary of FFC in Ville Platte and hitting my knees because of the song "You Are For Me" by Kari Jobe. It was a moment where the knowledge of who God is and His will so penetrated my heart. I got the knowledge (facts) that God will always be for me which gave me the understanding (meanings and concepts) that I was believing lies in certain situations where I had felt God was abandoning me, and then I was able to use wisdom (apply my knowledge and understanding) by repenting of and changing my misbeliefs and thus changing my whole attitude about certain situations.

Paul prayed in the beginning of Colossians that they would be filled with knowledge of God's will. That's simply asking that we would know the FACTS of God's will. It reminds me of the time God highlighted James 1:16 "Beloved do not err... every good and perfect gift is from above". James was saying BELOVED GET THIS KNOWLEDGE OF GOD'S WILL. GET THIS KNOWLEDGE OF GOD'S CHARACTER, 1) He IS FOR YOU. HE LOVES YOU. HE WANTS WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU. . Then have this understanding, get this concept, James 1:17, "EVERY GOOD AND PERFECT GIFT IS FROM ABOVE". Because you KNOW HIS CHARACTER AND HIS WILL, that He loves you and is for you, now you can get understanding, this concept that every good and perfect gift is from above, then you can apply wisdom to all of your circumstances because you have knowledge and understanding of His character.

Hosea says that His people perish for lack of knowledge. There is rampant misinformation and lack of knowledge throughout the globe about the character and will of God. Romans even warns "they have zeal without knowledge". We must take heed to the warnings throughout scripture to know who God is, to gain spiritual understanding, and to ask for and see wisdom. THEN, we will walk worthy of the Lord, be full pleasing to Him, be fruitful in every good work, have peace, have joy, etc. etc. etc. the rewards are far too many for me to list.

Be Blessed, Get knowledge, Get understanding, Use wisdom... J. Tate
