The Sin Debate

The two greatest commandments are to love God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself. Proverbs lists six things that God hates and "seven that are detestable to Him". Haughty eyes, lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicket schemes, feet that are quick to rush to do evil, a false witness who lies, and a person who stirs up conflict.

Colossians 3 says that if you are a Christian you have died to self and put away sexual immorality, passion, evil desire, covetousness, anger, wrath, malice, obscene talk from your mouth,

I could continue on with many scriptures about the things that please God and the things He hates. Well, hate seems like such a strong word, but when you are God and you are Holy, sin is something you hate.

So what type of sin do you hate and how much do you hate it?

Let me explain an area I feel we need to work on. Christians are to be counter-culture. That means we are to be DIFFERENT. Yet, I find that we often take on the "tone" of the culture while still trying to be different from it. Remember what I asked you... what type of sin do you hate and how much do you hate it?

I have a feeling we'd hear a few of these... I hate homosexuality (not homosexuals right? because we hate the sin and love the sinner?), I bet we  hate rape (not rapists right? because we hate the sin and love the sinner?, just asking?), we hate abortion (it's murder), drunkedness? some of us hate drunkedness.

What is my point? We have chosen along with society to choose which "political sins" to hate and completely disregarded others.

God HATES sin.

This morning I was reading an article written by a Christian who was being very outspoken about certain particular sins, which of course led to a very heated debate with other non-Christians in the comments. It got me to thinking.

Which sin does God hate the most? All of it. That means He hates my jealousy as much as He hates their abortion. He hates my pride as much as He hates her homosexuality. He hates my simple lack of faith as much as all of it because whatever is not from faith is sin (Rom. 14:23)

We need to get away from categorizing the sins of the church and the world.

Though I cry and I hurt when I think about aborted babies, God is not more mad at that confused woman for aborting the baby than He is at me when I am selfish. Remember God truly hates sin and truly loves sinners. "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this that, yet while we were still sinners Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)

Though I know the homosexuality is sin and there is a better way for them to live, I know that God hates heterosexual lust, premarital sex, impurity, and adultery just as much as he hates homosexuality.

Do not fall into this society way of thinking that certain "hot topic" issues are "hot topics" with God. Our God is not democratic, he's not a democrat, he's not a republican, and He is not political. His character is not up for discussion, debate, or subject to a vote.  God loves people. God hates sin. God hates sin so much and loved people so much that He sent Jesus to deal with the sin problem. Anyone who is willing to accept it can receive the blood of Jesus to cover their sin and as this grace gift covers their life and they fall in love with Jesus, their lifestyle will change because Jesus said, "If you love me, you obey me."

I am thankful that I am under the blood of Jesus because my character is still a work in progress. I rejoice that He was perfect, because I am not. I pray that we, the body of Christ, would hate sin, all sin even our own sin, as much as God hates sin, and I pray that we would love people, all people even our enemies, as God loves people.

Perhaps then we could lay down our "political sins" and pride to focus on the greatest commandments, love God and loving people, love that is full of mercy and grace, but bold and confident in the truth of the Word of God. Hating sin, loving people.

Be Blessed, J. Tate
