In our fast paced, get it done, instant gratification, technology dominant culture we can lose sight of the beauty in simplicity. This is a lesson that God often has to take me back to as I get caught up in being productive and neglect some of the finer things in life. The truth is my most favorite things are simple and quiet. I love walks in the park just being quiet or praying, I like to sit with a good book and read for hours, I like sipping a good cup of coffee on my back porch and listening to nature, I like sitting on the beach and listening to the sound of the waves, but sometimes we can get so caught up in life that we forget to allow ourselves time for simplicity.
I cut out all aspects of social media starting Saturday morning, due to some upcoming travel and work I need to plug back into our technological world. However, in just that short amount of time I've read a book, worked on writing my book, taken walks, spent quality time with some of my favorite people just relaxing and talking about our hearts, spent time just soaking in God's presence, all without logging into Facebook, Instagram, twitter, my blog, or even my email account (junk mail adds up FAST).
To be honest I feel... rested. I feel a new level of peace. I feel like frolicking through the fields and singing a song. LOL. Okay maybe that's overly dramatic.
In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength. (Isaiah 30:15)
God isn't complicated. He's not a God of confusion. Confusion comes in when hundreds of other noises, voices, and sounds come in and try to keep you from hearing Him. Him, our still small voice, loving, merciful, always gentle, Father. Him where our quietness and trust is our strength.
I'm not saying life won't get LOUD, that it won't get complicated, that it might not be hard at times, but real life, abundant life, comes through a simple answer.
Love Him, Trust Him.
When we love Him and trust Him, He shows us how to love others, He shows us how to live this busy, loud life, in peace, joy, and rest. Take time daily to be alone and be still with Him. You don't have to talk, you don't have to declare scripture, you don't have to worship, just be still before Him and allow His presence to come and do what you can't do.
Sometimes I just lay out flat on the ground and say God, I'm going to lay real still, you do whatever surgery you need, or tell me whatever I need to do to change, but either way I'm going to sit here, and wait for You to lead, You are in charge.
Trust in the Lord and do good; so you will live in the land, and enjoy security. Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun. Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him. (Psalm 37:3-7a)
