And the Lord said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." (Joshua 5:9) As a teenager I would get so irritated reading the story of God rescuing the Israelites out of Egypt. Here they were trapped in slavery, working for no gain, being mistreated, in bondage, and when God puts in motion a plan to save them they're pretty much uncooperative and ungracious.
At that point in my zeal and pride I just couldn't understand how they could be so stupid and why God would even want to help them. It's amusing how the older I've gotten and the more mistakes I've made, then the more I thank God for His unrelenting love for His people. I thank God that He didn't give up on them and He won't give up on me.
Despite their moaning, idolatry, complaining, and distrust He continued to give them manna to eat, a cloud by day, a fire by night. He never stopped being the all sufficient Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Shamma, Jehovah Rapha etc. All the while as time kept on their sin kept them from the great promise of God.
I've heard it said many times, "It didn't take God 40 years to get the Israelites out of Egypt, it took 40 years to get Egypt out of the Israelites."
In class we are reading a book titled, "Supernatural Ways of Royalty" by Kris Vallatton. (It's a good one). As I was flying home yesterday I was reading the book on the plane and was moved to tears several times. Kris was explaining that we were all created to be princes, but the problem is most of us believe we are paupers. He says if you put a prince in a prison, he'll turn it into a palace, but if you put a pauper in a palace he'll turn it into a prison. The more I read, the more I saw the very issue of the Israelites and of course some of my own as well.
The Israelites were God's chosen people! They were special. They were His. They were hand picked! And yet they didn't know how to be children, they knew how to be slaves. They didn't know how to be grateful they were too busy being controlled by an orphan, slavery, mentality. They didn't know how to rest and trust, they knew how to work and complain. Why only get food for one day we should hoard it? Why not build a god that we can understand? Why praise You when we haven't even gotten to the promise land yet?
Can you imagine the years of negative, pauper, slavery, orphan, thought patterns that were inside of them? The reality is had God chosen to let them right on into the promise land they probably would have destroyed that place in less than a week! Paupers turn palaces into prisons.
What about you? How were you raised to "think" about yourself? About your life? About your circumstances? About your God?
Many times we have a slavery mentality and we don't even realize it. To be honest I could tell you story after story of this in my own life where God has had to and STILL HAS TO continually confront my orphan and slavery mentality. My favorite transformation to pull on is simply the fact that when I was saved I was transformed from being a slave to a child! I no longer had to work for love, earn provision, or even behave a certain way to be approved of! But simply because I read that in the Word and even preached sermons on it doesn't mean that my thinking had changed. BUT praise God, there is HOPE!
The Word says in Ephesians 4:22-23 that we can put off the old man and be renewed in the spirit of our minds! It says by the washing of the Word we can have a renewed mind. It says that we don't have to be conformed to this world, but we can be TRANSFORMED by the renewal of our minds.
As I was reading in Joshua this morning the Lord had the the whole nation of Israel be circumcised before they entered into the promise land. Every Israelite that had known slavery had died and now the ones left had only known what it felt like to be FREE. Right after they were circumcised comes the verse above, "Today I have rolled away, the reproach of Egypt from you".
YOUR SLAVERY MENTALITY IS GONE. You are not slaves, you are FREE. There will no longer be any stain of Egypt on you. Nothing that has to do with slavery shall be apart of who you are ever again. The pain, the hurt, the mindsets, the orphan spirit, the slavery mentality, is GONE! The consequences that resulted from the root of your slavery mentality have been rolled away. THERE IS NO MORE EGYPT.
This picture moved my heart this morning. "A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God" (Romans 2:28-29)
You are offered the same promise that the Israelites were given. Praise God our circumcision is no longer of the physical nature, but of the spiritual! By the circumcision of your heart the reproach of your former life is rolled away from you.
In Christ you are set free. You are no longer a slave, but you are a child. However, you have to begin to think and act like a child. You're not a sinner, you're a saint. You have to begin to think like a saint. This battle for us is in the same place it was for the Israelites, it's in our minds. As you walk in a renewed mind you will begin to see yourself in your NEW CONDITION! A NEW CREATION. A CHILD! FORGIVEN, LOVED, FREE!
Don't let the mentality of your childhood or past keep you in circumstances that hinder the promises of God. Embrace heart circumcision and the renewing of your mind. Then listen as He speaks to your heart, "Today I have rolled away, the reproach of your past from you"
